GSTR-10: Understanding the Final Return for GST Cancellation

GSTR-10: Understanding the Final Return for GST Cancellation

GSTR-10 is a final return that needs to be filed by businesses whose GST registration has been canceled. This return ensures that all tax liabilities are settled before the cancellation becomes effective, and it helps in the smooth closure of GST records.

What is GSTR-10?

GSTR-10 is the final return that businesses must file when their GST registration is canceled. This return is filed to declare the stock details and any outstanding liabilities or tax payments at the time of cancellation. It ensures that businesses are compliant with the GST rules during the cancellation process and that all taxes have been cleared before the registration is officially revoked.

When is GSTR-10 Filed?

GSTR-10 must be filed when a business’s GST registration is canceled by the GST authorities or when the business voluntarily requests to cancel its registration. The return needs to be filed within three months from the date of cancellation, or within the time frame specified by the GST department.

Key Components of GSTR-10

  1. Details of the Stock: Information regarding outstanding stock at the time of GST registration cancellation.
  2. Tax Liability: If the business had any input tax credit (ITC) on stock, that needs to be paid back.
  3. ITC Reversal: The business must reverse any unutilized ITC on goods or services, which was claimed before the cancellation of registration.
  4. Payment of Outstanding Tax: The return must include the payment of any taxes owed as a result of stock or ITC reversal.

Steps to File GSTR-10

  1. Log in to GST Portal: Access your GST account on the GST Portal.
  2. Go to ‘Returns Dashboard’: Select the option for ‘GSTR-10’ under the returns section.
  3. Enter Stock Details: Provide details of any stock that remains after cancellation, including tax details.
  4. Calculate and Pay Tax: If applicable, calculate the tax on remaining stock and make the necessary payment.
  5. Submit the Return: Once all details are entered and taxes are paid, submit the GSTR-10 return.

  1. GSTIN of the Business
  2. Details of Stock
